It is a blessing to have more than 300 students in our program—and so many wonderful, dedicated Catechists. Both parents and Catechists play a very special role in the students’ lives. Parents are the primary educators and witnesses of our faith. Catechists are responsible for teaching the faith through instruction and their own example to the children entrusted to their care.
This Year
Religious education looks forward to another exciting year of faith and fellowship. Many new students have come to us this year excited to learn about their faith. New Catechists have joined us as well, full of knowledge about their Catholic faith and ready to share it with their students.
Family Masses
This year we are scheduling monthly family masses for our OLS School and Religious Education families. Families are invited to attend while students are invited to participate in the mass. They have been more than happy to carry the OLS-SA flag, help with collections, and bring up the offertory. This opportunity has made them realize that they are a part of the mass and of the parish itself. All masses have been well attended. Sharing these moments with our students has been priceless as we get to grow in faith with them throughout this year. This photo is from the Epiphany Family Mass.
Family Activities
Religious education implemented some new activities that have been well attended and well received. For our first graders we had a rosary activity on October 16 and 20. There students and parents learned more about this most sacred prayer, while they also learned more about our Blessed Mother.
We had our first Advent Teach and Learn sessions on November 17 and Nov 20. All of our classes participated in an Advent activity where students and their parents made the Jessie tree. It was a powerful moment to see parents and children helping each other to complete this project. By decorating ornaments with pictures of the Bible students and parents went on a journey through these many stories to remember God’s promise.
Parents said that they enjoyed participating in these activities and learning with their children. These moments of fellowship have helped foster a stronger relationship between our Religious Education program and families. It has helped parents join in their student’s education and gives them the opportunity to remember their own Catechism.
We appreciate the part that our parents and Catechists have played in making our religious education program successful so far this year. We hope that it will continue to be as successful as it has been thus far.
Come Join Us
Everyone involved in this program—catechist, student, and parent—is challenged by the words and example of Jesus to respect each person’s right to be treated with dignity, respect, and love. Parents, thank you for your volunteer help. If you haven’t already signed up, we need you to volunteer.
Catechists and aides also are needed. If you love your faith and are willing to share it with children, please call the Office of Religious Education (609-587-4372).
As Christmas Nears
I take this opportunity to offer prayer-filled wishes on this very important Feast Day which celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ. May you find joy in the gift of this tiny Baby who has the power to change our lives forever.
Have a Blessed Christmas and New Year 2020!
Mariyam Francis,
Director of Religious Education
