The Boy Scouts of America annually celebrates its founding on February 8, 1910, based on the program started by Lord Baden Powell in England on August 1, 1907. Scout Sunday was added to the Scout celebration in the middle 1940s. Scout Sunday is always the Sunday preceding February 8, unless the 8
th is a Sunday, in which case the 8
th would be Scout Sunday. The Saturday following February 8 is Scout Sabbath. The Scout Sunday tradition was started to make people in houses of worship aware of Scouting, and to allow Scouts to live out their "Duty to God" pledged each week. The Scout Law says that a "Scout is Reverent" and the Scouts of all ages promise to do their "Duty to God." These values strengthen youth character in their family, community, and faith.
Here at Our Lady of Sorrows - St. Anthony, and going back in history at OLS, Scouts have traditionally celebrated Scout Sunday by coming together at mass. This year, as in each year since our parish merger, Cub Scout Pack 38 and Boy Scout Troop 38 will join together on Sunday, February 11, at the 11:00 a.m. Mass at OLS. Other parish members who are Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, or Venture Crew members in other units are welcome to join us in uniform for our celebration at mass. Please arrive by 10:45.
A major change is coming to Cub Scouts in the next few months. Girls will be invited to participate. Here at OLS-SA, we are trying to be one of the first Packs in the area to allow girls to participate. But one of the key things we need to make our case is GIRLS! Girls in Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd Grade are invited to contact Damian Bomm or Deacon Kevin as soon as possible if you would like to be part of this new program from the start. Don’t worry, in the next 18 months or so it is planned that all girls up through 12th grade will gradually be welcomed into the BSA programs. We look forward to seeing the first girl to earn Scouting’s highest honor, Eagle Scout, at OLS-SA. Get an early start if you are in K-2nd grade and contact us today to sign up!
