There is nothing like good news, and it's even better when we can spread it around! Weve all heard that the skill of handwriting is quickly becoming a lost art, but that certainly is not the case here at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic School! Handwriting is taught formally throughout our K to 8 curriculum. The handwriting debate has been getting so much attention across the country within the past few years. Some school districts are leaving writing instruction out of the curriculum completely!
OLS not only develops our students' handwriting skills, we nurture them by entering our students in the Zaner-Bloser National Handwriting Contest. This year, more than 300,000 students participated in the contest. The first round of regional winners included six OLS students, Alyssa Fleurant (Grade 1), Ben Walsh (Grade 2), Sofia Gordeev (Grade 3), Andrew Kite (Grade 5), Julio Juarez (Grade 6), and Jada Mack (Grade 8). These students placed in an outstanding position in their respective grade level. This week we were contacted by the Zaner-Bloser Company to let us know that Alyssa Fleurant (Grade 1), and Julio Juarez (Grade 6) have been named as State-level Winners at their grade level! These two outstanding students brought home the prize for OLS! They each are awarded medals and crystal trophies. Their entries will now represent their grade level at the national level! As an added award, they earned a gift certificate for Our Lady of Sorrows School to continue the formal study of handwriting across the grades! Way to go OLS students! And you thought handwriting was a lost art. Well, it's alive and well and living at OLS.
