There are so many ways to mark a 60th Anniversary! Here at Our Lady of Sorrows School, the children are celebrating in a very unique way. Our school is marked by student leadership, caring, sharing, and service to others. What better way to share the light of OLS School than to extend the children's light to people outside of the school.
Under the leadership and creativity of Mrs. Gutierrez, the parent of Jessie in Grade 8, as well as OLS graduate Antonio, our students have been teaming to learn under the leadership of an "upperclassman."
Our first Fall project involved teaming Kindergarten with Grade 6. The children designed and assembled palcemats, napkin holders, and personal notes for Meals on Wheels.
The two grades met to review the project and to learn a bit more about the people they would be helping. Kindergarteners colored and pasted under the careful guidance of sixth graders.
The fun part was when the sixth grade students brought home their "Kindergarten Homework." Yes, each sixth grader carried home the kindergarten cutting pieces. They cut, they collected, they gathered, and they carefully carried them back to school in a bag. On the second meeting, the kindergarten children were ready for assembly because their older friends had completed their cutting out homework assignment!
The completed Thanksgiving table settings were delivered to Meals on Wheels to support the many people in need who celebrated their Thanksgiving dinner through the generosity of the many volunteers with Meals on Wheels.
The December project coupled First and Seventh Grade classes to create Christmas cards and baked caramel popcorn! No doubt, the teaming and learning experiences were outstanding once again. This time the recipients were our men and women in the service. Each and every card had a personal message from our students!
