The patronal feast of a parish is a most important day to be celebrated. In fact, the Church considers it important enough to give the celebration its highest liturgical rank, Solemnity, which would be celebrated even when it falls on a Sunday.
Although next Sunday is the 24th Sunday in Ordinary Time, our parish will celebrate its Patronal Solemnity of Our Lady of Sorrows, who is the co-patron of our community. Next weekend, worship aids with the Solemnity's proper readings and special hymns will be used at all Masses at both our churches.
The same liturgical directive would apply should June 13, the Feast of St. Anthony of Padua—our other co-patron—fall on a Sunday (unless the day happens to be Pentecost, Trinity Sunday, or Corpus Christi).
Following the last Sunday morning Mass at both churches next week, we will conclude our patronal celebration with light refreshments in the church halls.
