Bishop Thomas J. Tobin of Providence, Rhode Island, made it clear that Catholics must oppose the killing of unborn babies in abortions.
“Just saw a headline in a Catholic newspaper with the phrase ‘pro-abortion Catholic.’ Sorry. That’s a contradiction in terms,”
Tobin wrote on Twitter. “You can’t be a Catholic, at least not an authentic one, and be ‘pro-abortion.’ Or ‘pro-choice.’ It’s the same thing.”
But Catholic leaders have been clear that true Catholics cannot support the killing of unborn babies in abortions. In November, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops released a letter
urging Catholics to oppose abortion as a “preeminent priority.”
The Catholic Church teaches that every human life is valuable because he/she is created in the image of God, and abortion is evil because it destroys God’s most precious creation, a baby in the womb. Every year in America, nearly 1 million unborn babies are slaughtered in legal abortions. Since
Roe v. Wade, more than 61 million have lost their lives.
